This is a live jazz gig listings service from Jazz in Reading. We feature mostly modern jazz gigs happening within 20 miles or so of Reading.

The listings used to be published monthly, under the name 'Jazz Round About Reading', but all gigs now appear in the calendar, the link for which is below left. Check it out whenever you feel the urge to hear live jazz. Don't forget to refresh your browser each time you visit, to be sure of catching all latest changes or additions. Please check with venues before setting off - all details may be subject to change.

Guildford Jazz at The Guildford Institute | Alan Barnes & Dave Newton

Two of the UK’s world-class and most popular jazz musicians present a lunchtime special for the Guildford Festival. Saxophonist Alan Barnes has received over 25 British Jazz Awards and has twice been made BBC Jazz Musician of the Year, while pianist Dave Newton has been voted best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz awards for the thirteenth time. They have been playing duets together for over 40 years, displaying an unrivalled musical empathy that can only come with long experience.

Zoë White is a jazz and bossa nova singer whose repertoire ranges from classic standards to the music of Brazil and Latin America. She brings a warm, understated vocal style and a strong feel for melody, lyric and the intimate storytelling at the heart of these songs.

Annie Parker has a flute and isn’t afraid to use it! She brings her arsenal of flutes to performances: concert, alto and bass, which apart from giving a range of timbres to play with also provides plenty of scope for plumbing and U-bend jokes. Annie likes to dispel any notion of the flute as just a sweet and gentle instrument, playing with energy and spontaneity and going full-throttle when required.

Tom Vincent has a passion for all things percussive. Decades of performing have seen him play hundreds of gigs in all styles of music all over the UK. A graduate of the Academy of Contemporary Music Tom has performed and recorded with a wide variety of acts. Having built a career as a successful drummer he has now ventured into the world of vibraphone. He enjoys performing everything from jazz classics to pop hits and sharing the wonderful sound of the vibes.

Dinner Jazz at The Angel | Sheena Caprice & Friends

Sheena Caprice is an inspiring jazz vocalist, who began singing at the age of four. Her passion for Jazz was heavily influenced by greats such as Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Carter and Nina Simone. Her performances also reflect more contemporary artists such as Rachelle Ferrell and Dianne Reeves. Sheena has performed at various venues, including Sky Lounge at Castle View Windsor.

Jazz at the Six Bells: Peter Bingham | Beenham

Peter Bingham started playing clarinet in his pre-teen years and later converted to saxophone at the age of 15 in order to play in his uncle’s dance band. He ran that band after his uncle retired and also played in an organ trio. He began playing modern jazz at a jazz workshop at the West End Centre in the late 1970s. Peter’s current band Equinox, formed in 2000, has a ‘first Tuesday of the month’ residency at The Four Horseshoes, Sherfield on Loddon.

Chromatic harmonica virtuoso Phil Hopkins celebrates the richly varied musical output of the greatest jazz harmonica player Toots Thielemans. In a long career, Thielemans’ expressive harmonica added magic to the recordings of a pantheon of jazz greats including Benny Goodman, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny and Quincy Jones. Completing the trio are the fantastic pianist Liam Dunachie and Guildford’s Marianne Windham on bass. Expect an hour of glorious swing, samba and fascinating stories of Thielemans’ life and times.

Guildford Jazz at The Stoke | Neil Angilley Trio

A welcome return to Guildford Jazz for this awesome trio. Their unique sound incorporates instrumental virtuosity and three-part vocal harmony, creating an uplifting take on the infectious rhythms of Brazil and Cuba. They have released five albums and work regularly in the London jazz scene and across the UK, performing at prestigious venues including Ronnie Scott’s, The Stables, and the 606 Club. Featuring Neil Angilley (piano & vocals), Davide Mantovani (bass & vocals), and Davide Giovannini (drums & lead vocals).

Guildford Jazz at Wood Street

Another wonderful afternoon on Wood Street Village Green in aid of Challengers, a charity that supports disabled young people and their families. Headlining is the multi-award-winning pianist Liane Carroll, one of the UK’s most popular and dynamic vocalists, plus the James Davison & Calum Au Quintet evoking the spirit of 50’s and 60’s jazz. There’s also a set from Wood St regulars the Somethin’ Else Big Band and a first appearance on the newcomer’s stage from the Alice Milburn Quartet.

Guildford Jazz at The Guildford Institute | Rob Barron Trio

Jazz pianist and composer Rob Barron has been described as “one of the most creative and versatile musicians of his generation” and is highly regarded for his improvisational flair and innate musicality that reveal influences of the American greats Cedar Walton, Wynton Kelly and Sonny Clark. He performs regularly with visiting American jazz musicians and has featured on numerous movie soundtracks, including Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Completing the trio are drummer Josh Morrison and bassist Marianne Windham.

The Bader Heritage Band | Kingwoood

Wyfold Group Riding for the Disabled are teaming up with the Bader Heritage Band at their yard for a unique and entertaining event to celebrate that it’s all about what you CAN do! The band comprises professional standard musicians with physical, sensory or mental health conditions and they will be playing great numbers as well as offering a short workshop to attendees of any age who would like to bash, blow or pluck an instrument! There will be a BBQ, bar, cakes and other refreshments, and fun wheeled activities for all the family. Our ponies will be keeping an eye on things from their fields too! Come and join us!

Jan Steele is a composer and plays jazz saxophone, clarinet and flute. He studied at London and York Universities, has written music for Channel 4 documentaries and has played all over Europe. He leads various bands ranging from contemporary music to Afro-Cuban/Latin Jazz.
