This is a live jazz gig listings service from Jazz in Reading. We feature mostly modern jazz gigs happening within 20 miles or so of Reading.
The listings used to be published monthly, under the name 'Jazz Round About Reading', but all gigs now appear in the calendar, the link for which is below left. Check it out whenever you feel the urge to hear live jazz. Don't forget to refresh your browser each time you visit, to be sure of catching all latest changes or additions. Another wonderful afternoon on Wood Street Village Green in aid of Challengers, a charity that supports disabled young people and their families. Headlining is the multi-award-winning pianist Liane Carroll, one of the UK’s most popular and dynamic vocalists, plus the James Davison & Calum Au Quintet evoking the spirit of 50’s and 60’s jazz. There’s also a set from Wood St regulars the Somethin’ Else Big Band and a first appearance on the newcomer’s stage from the Alice Milburn Quartet.

Jazz pianist and composer Rob Barron has been described as “one of the most creative and versatile musicians of his generation” and is highly regarded for his improvisational flair and innate musicality that reveal influences of the American greats Cedar Walton, Wynton Kelly and Sonny Clark. He performs regularly with visiting American jazz musicians and has featured on numerous movie soundtracks, including Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Completing the trio are drummer Josh Morrison and bassist Marianne Windham.

Wyfold Group Riding for the Disabled are teaming up with the Bader Heritage Band at their yard for a unique and entertaining event to celebrate that it’s all about what you CAN do! The band comprises professional standard musicians with physical, sensory or mental health conditions and they will be playing great numbers as well as offering a short workshop to attendees of any age who would like to bash, blow or pluck an instrument! There will be a BBQ, bar, cakes and other refreshments, and fun wheeled activities for all the family. Our ponies will be keeping an eye on things from their fields too! Come and join us!

Sheena Caprice is an inspiring jazz vocalist, who began singing at the age of four. Her passion for Jazz was heavily influenced by greats such as Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Carter and Nina Simone. Her performances also reflect more contemporary artists such as Rachelle Ferrell and Dianne Reeves. Sheena has performed at various venues, including Sky Lounge at Castle View Windsor.

The UK’s leading virtuoso accordionist Karen Street has played with a host of other well-known performers, including Bryan Ferry, Grace Jones, Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli and leading orchestras such as The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and The London Symphony Orchestra. Her ‘L’Esprit du Jazz’ Quartet plays music inspired by French swing, Latin and Tango alongside original compositions and jazz standards. Jan Steele is a composer and plays jazz saxophone, clarinet and flute. He studied at London and York Universities, has written music for Channel 4 documentaries and has played all over Europe. He leads various bands ranging from contemporary music to Afro-Cuban/Latin Jazz.

Saxophonist and bandleader Ewen is originally from Malawi but spent his formative years in Edinburgh. He is currently based in Oxford. Amongst others, he has performed with Jim Mullen, Steve Waterman, Geoff Castle, Kenny Baker and Dave Jones. He has an MMus in Jazz performance from Birmingham Conservatoire and teaches the saxophone and Jazz Improvisation around Oxfordshire.
