Jan Steele is a composer and plays jazz saxophone, clarinet and flute. He has written music for TV documentaries and has played all over Europe. He leads various bands ranging from contemporary music to Afro-Cuban/Latin Jazz.

Henley Jazz Workshop 29 July – 2 August

29 July – 2 August 2024 – The ever popular Henley Jazz Workshop for adult beginners and improvers will be holding its 11th annual workshop at Valley Road School in Henley, featuring an impressive tutor line-up of Karen Sharp, Alex Clarke, Steve Waterman, Denny Ilett and Thomas L’Etienne, with Andy Crowdy overseeing the workshop as musical director. With more emphasis on improvisation techniques, but still small-group based, this year’s places are going quickly.

The workshop culminates with an evening meal and drinks on 2 August, overlooking the stunning Oaken Grove Vineyard in Fawley with the groups performing their favourite numbers.

Matt Wates’ swinging, accessible music has been described as “an infectious blend of Jazz Messengers-style bebop and West Coast cool, with some funky rhythm and blues thrown in”. A favourite at festivals, jazz clubs and concert halls throughout Europe, the music is a mix of classic jazz standards and originals performed by some of the finest players on the scene. The Wood Street Jazz Festival is back for our 10th year anniversary in 2024! On Sunday 21st July we will be welcoming you to an afternoon of jazz on the Wood Street Village Green, all in support of Challengers! The afternoon’s music includes one of the UK’s finest swing bands Jivin’ Miss Daisy, the award winning Nigel Price Organ Trio , plus the Somethin’ Else Big Band and our rising stars acoustic stage. You’ve heard the original Radio Drama and seen the Play – now experience the Musical! OK, not exactly a musical – but read on…

In 1965, inspired by Dylan Thomas’ masterpiece, renowned pianist and composer Stan Tracey, ‘the godfather of British jazz’, composed Jazz Suite: Under Milk Wood – a beautifully constructed set of eight tunes, each with an unmistakably individual character, including the acknowledged genius of the tone-poem Starless and Bible Black.

Jazz in Reading – in collaboration with Progress Theatre – has arranged a performance of the work: Stan Tracey’s music interwoven with Dylan Thomas’ words. This is a rare opportunity to experience two musical and literary masterworks at their uplifting and life-affirming best.

Theo Warren is a 19-year-old saxophonist and clarinetist who is currently a first-year student at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London. He is a composer and arranger, studying and collaborating with some of the finest musicians in the country. His passion for jazz, coupled with his unwavering commitment, makes him a promising talent in the jazz scene.

Joanna Eden presents a show celebrating the music of Ella Fitzgerald. From ‘A Tisket A Tasket’, which brought Ella to fame with the Chick Webb Orchestra, to the songbook album classics. Joanna launched Embraceable Ella to much acclaim at the London Jazz Festival. With Paul Higgs on trumpet, Chris Ingham on piano, George Double on drums and Marianne WIndham on bass. The evening will open with big band swing from the FARNHAM BIG BAND. The garden kiosk will be open for drinks and snacks, and you can bring your own picnic. Every penny raised at this event supports GUTS, fighting bowel cancer.

Michelle has cultivated a distinctive vocal style and versatility that sounds at home in all kinds of musical genres, be it jazz, R&B, blues or even country. However she is primarily a jazz vocalist, inspired and influenced by the great queens of jazz such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan. Her true passion is singing the great jazz standards and American songbook numbers.
